The Disarming Begins

The Enemy Press New York Times reports that firearm confiscation will begin prior to forced evacuations. "No civilians in New Orleans will be allowed to carry pistols, shotguns or other firearms, said P. Edwin Compass III, the superintendent of police. 'Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons,' he said." Of course that just means you plain old citizens, other, more equal citizens won't be forced to comply with this confiscation scheme.
But that order apparently does not apply to hundreds of security guards hired by businesses and some wealthy individuals to protect property. The guards, employees of private security companies like Blackwater, openly carry M-16's and other assault rifles. Mr. Compass said that he was aware of the private guards, but that the police had no plans to make them give up their weapons." No plans to make them give up their weapons. Why? Because they're rich people? I thought that the Democrats wanted to empower the poor in New Orleans? What gives? Well, the usual gives. They can't abide the thought that someone would not agree with their forced evacuation. Now, it seems like a smart thing to do to leave the area, but why do our second amendment rights suddenly disappear? The fact is that the second amendment is most in force during times of distress. I know that the police don't want to face their fellow citizens in a shootout over evacuation, but if people don't want to leave, let them alone. They should be warned however that they can expect no protection or little at all, and no public services will be available either. Then let them choose. And let them live with the consequences of their choice. That's what Freedom means.
