New Year, New Shooting

In days gone by, New Year's Eve has seen many people shoot off their shotguns at the stroke of midnight. Unfortunately, I was working. But that didn't stop me from taking a few shots on New Year's Day. The red marks are hits from the wadding. Shot from about room distance, no real targeting here, just seeing how it patterns at the expected home defense range. After shooting birdshot and a few rounds of buckshot, I fully agree with those who say birdshot is for the birds. Nice tight pattern, but it doesn't seem that it would really be effective at stopping someone. You can see from the pellets outside the mass that they are very small. The three buckshot rounds look as if someone put a few rounds of thirty caliber shots into the target. Much more effective I believe. Bigger holes, faster bleed out for the unfortunate bad guy.

I didn't just bring out the shotgun. I haven't shot my Swiss K31 for a year, so I gave it a chance at a target. I won't win any prizes, but that guy would be dead, so I guess that's good enough at this point. Twenty rounds, one complete miss, the rest hits. I was shooting from a sitting position at about fifty yards. There was a pretty stiff crosswind, so I'm hoping that this caused some of the bad shooting. Of course, I can't blame it all on the wind....
